The deepsky database in Starry Night 8 is major, big, huge, mega, much, more, lots, groovy improved. TheSkyX doesn't have anything remotely close to that. I can create an observing plan in Starry Night the afternoon before an observing session and it is on my phone ready to go when I connect it to my scope. Astronomy software has been way behind until Starry Night 8. The logs I enter in SkySafari at my scope sync in real time for me to relive the memory in Starry Night the next morning. That has been the proper way to use computers for the past decade. My phone is an extension of my laptop, same data and changes sync back and forth. Create a Onenote on your phone and view and add to on your laptop.

You edit an Excel file on your laptop and little later that update is synced to your phone. So how does that relate to Starry Night? It's 2019 and the modern way to use computers are different. SkySafari covers 100% of my needs at the scope. I use SkySafari's observing list to guide my scope to cool new targets and I log my observations right at the scope. This setup works great and accurately guides my scope to any target I wish. SkySafari connects to both my Inteliscope dobs through SkiFi wifi hub. I don't use a laptop in the field at all. Out in the field at my telescope I don't use either TheSky or Starry Night. I am strictly a visual observer and enjoy public outreach. I'll tell you how I use them which may help you decide.

It has a built in Plate Solver, and is a steal at US $99.00 and PHD2 guiding designed to run with SGP is freeware and in use by so many of us. Considerably cheaper, SGP is the "best in the house" for imaging.

If you have an observatory, the SkyX Pro would probably be more suited to your needs. So for more up-to-date appearance, and functionality.and having no previous Planetarium program as yet, I would take the plunge and get The SkyX Serious Astronomer. You won't be able to Plate Solve, run Dome Control, etc. You can still control your mount with the Serious Astronomer version. If you want all of the add-ons, I think it would be better to go for the SkyX Pro (and not the Serious Astronomer Version). The addon-s (if you really need them, are atrocious in cost as well. You can only put the SkyX on 2 computers, or else pay more for more than 2 installations. It works very well on two monitors simultaneously.
I will create an observing list of about 180 objects in your defined area at any time of day. In Canada it totalled $201.00 Canadian! But I decided to go for it and I have had it now for 4 months and I am very happy with it. The SkyX Serious Astronomer is quite expensive. The reason being that it hasn't progressed that much from Starry Night 6, which I have.
